Digital transformation is often introduced as a project. A system to implement, a dashboard to deploy, a timeline to meet. At first, this framing makes the effort feel manageable.

Most initiatives start with a real frustration. Reports take too long. Downtime feels higher than expected. Data exists across systems but never fully aligns. Eventually, a familiar question surfaces in a leadership meeting: why can’t we see what is really happening on the floor in a way that supports confident decisions?

That question becomes a project. Budgets are approved. Software is selected. Momentum builds as new screens come online and data begins to flow. For a time, it feels like progress has arrived.

Then the questions return. Why does this number look different than last month? Why does one line appear to perform well while still missing plan? Why are teams debating the data instead of acting on it?

This is often the moment leaders realize something important. The project may have succeeded, but the transformation did not.

Most organizations do not struggle because they chose the wrong technology. They struggle because a single initiative is asked to compensate for years of operational complexity, including inconsistent automation, manual workarounds, layered infrastructure, and misaligned performance metrics. No system can absorb that variation and still deliver trusted insight.

Digital transformation is not about installing software. It is about building capability.

Projects deliver outcomes within a defined scope. Transformation reshapes how work is executed, how data is trusted, and how decisions are made over time. When it is treated as a one-time effort, organizations gain visibility without clarity and data without confidence.

The leaders who make lasting progress stop asking when transformation will be finished and start asking what capability needs to be built next.

Last week, GPA hosted a two-day @Exotek Peer Group Meeting in the Ruston office, bringing together senior leaders from seven system integration companies. Both onsite and remote participants contributed to open conversation about the state of the integration and industrial automation industry.

Our Wilmington, NC team recently took part in two engaging technical training sessions focused on advancing our understanding of modern automation and wireless technologies.

Chris Cibella from @phoenixcontactusa joined us to share the latest on their automation solutions—specifically the PLCnext Controls platform. Chris gave an in-depth look at its capabilities, including advanced control, IT/OT integration, and flexible programming. His session sparked great conversation about how PLCnext can support scalable and future-ready automation.

Shortly after, Tobias Meyer from Aunex Inc. led an interactive overview of their industrial wireless product line, with a focus on Bluetooth Low Energy (Bluetooth LE). He walked the team through how BLE can be integrated into safety and control systems, helping improve connectivity, efficiency, and workplace safety. The GPA team came ready with questions and showed strong interest in how wireless solutions can enhance plant operations.

These sessions not only built our team’s technical knowledge but also sparked ideas for how we can apply these innovations to real projects. We’re grateful for the time and insights from both Aunex and Phoenix Contact and excited to continue exploring what’s possible.
